Due to growing life expectancy and unhealthy lifestyles, dementia is a fast growing chronic disease that affects the behaviour and communication abilities of people living with this neurological disorder. Caregivers are often challenged by this fact, which could lead to stress, helplessness, aggressive situations and caregiver burnout. The SUCCESS project provides an innovative mobile training application to support formal and informal caregivers to appropriately interact with people with dementia. The application provides evidence-based communication and intervention strategies and guides the user to effectively respond to specific situations in dementia care.

Purpose

The SUCCESS app provides caregivers of people with dementia with innovative training sessions and role-plays with the help of an avatar. The aim is to raise awareness and understanding on the changing behaviours of the person with dementia and to learn effective communication and interaction strategies. Thus, caregivers are able to receive help and advice in special situations of dementia care.

Target group

Informal (e.g. family members and friends) and formal caregivers (e.g. nurses with less education/experience with dementia) that have contact with persons with dementia.

Impact for citizen

The user will learn how to interact with the people they care for. It guides the user to effectively respond to specific situations in dementia care and also provides strategies for emotional support as to help carers to keep balance between care responsibilities and personal needs.

Impact for staff

In many areas professional caregivers and nurses do not receive dedicated training on the communication and interaction with people with dementia. This for example applies in the area of 24 hour care where SUCCESS can significantly contribute to reduce burdensome situations.

Economic impact

We foresee two possible approaches. On one hand as standalone app offered through the market place and on the other hand as trainings app for all kind of care organizations who can then offer it to their formal or informal caregivers.

Is currently used by 60 informal and formal caregivers in Austria and Romania. Experiences from this field trial will guide the market introduction of SUCCESS.
