4Mvideo is a fun, social and motivational video-based exercise system which can be set-up at home to allow older adults to go on a virtual bike tour by themselves or with friends and family. Users can choose from an array of readymade cycling videos set in urban and rural Denmark, or videos can be filmed by loved ones for inclusion and motivation to exercise even if they can’t go outside. 4MVideo can be enjoyed without an internet connection and can be displayed on large monitors such as a TV or projector at home or at the gym.
The system is set-up using an exercise bike, a wireless cadence sensor and a tablet computer. The sensor sends information about pedal activity to the 4Mvideo-app on the tablet playing a user selected cycling video. The video starts, stops and plays the video in accordance with the pedal activity. The system requires only little space and can be used with both a mini, or standard, exercise bike.
To motivate and increase options to do daily exercise as recommended by national health authorities.
There are two primary target groups:
- The home user who is self-reliant and able to operate a tablet computer or smartphone. The user is motivated for physical activity in order to maintain or improve muscle strength and general fitness level, but is limited in his/her possibilities, due to impaired motoric capabilities - eg poor balance, knees, hip or the like.
- Citizens staying at municipal training or care centers using indoor training cycling as part of regular training and exercise activities.
Impact for citizen
Quality of life improves due to improved physical fitness. Users informs about short term results such as: a) “I sleep better and have less leg pains at night after cycling before bedtime”; b) “I cycle before walking outdoor – it ‘warms up’ my legs and knees”; c) “my leg muscles have become stronger and I feel more safe when walking”.
Impact for staff
At Bakkegården, a Gladsaxe municipal senior center, employees report that 4Mvideo increases the residents motivation for cycling training, which is used for warm-up in preparation for heavier physical training. It saves time and facilitates better work flow for the employees.
The product strengthens the users physically condition and ties to their social network (personal bicycle videos being made by / with family and others). Thus, the need for home care services are reduced or postponed. Users can enjoy independent life in their own home, longer. We refer to the fact that age-related loss of muscle mass and physical frailty of elderly people, often is associated with a physically inactive lifestyle. One of the consequences is approx. 40,000 emergency hospital contacts in Denmark due to accidents from falling among the elderly, corresponding to 75% of the elderly total number of emergency contacts. Solutions like 4Mvideo, which can strengthen older people physically capabilities, have great potential for social welfare cost savings.
